at this hour... and could cause pr good evening. panic on the tracks. a derailed bart train has crippled service at this hour and could cause problems tomorrow. it was 700 feet outside the concord station. linda tells us how service is affected. >> reporter: they're continuing to work on those two cars that did run off the track. you can see them right behind me. the engineers are still examing it. bart says they're going to bring in a giant construction crane. they're going to lift two cars and put them right back on the track. then they can bring in the needed repairs on that damaged section. the ten-car train heading to san francisco international airport just left the station. bart calls it a slow speed derailment. passengers said it was a bumpy ride that to get scary. >> it started shaking back and forth and moving around.

it almost felt like we were going over stuff and one of the ladies sitting next to me said, i don't think we should be moving and she got up and started being loud. >> reporter: there's significant track. they're looking to see if work being done near the station caused the derailment. >> when it was crossing over to go into the single track mode, that's when the slow speed derailment happened. >> reporter: an estimated 65 passengers were on the train. officers and firefighters were able to get passengers evacuated quickly. >> we had to move down a few cars and we had to climb down a ladder sort of thing and down a hill. >> there will be no service between pleasant hill and bay

point springs until further notice. a bus bridge has been set up. it's not known when full service will resume. >> late this afternoon a crane was able to move that last car on the train out so that engineers can get to the location. and -- all right. there's linda reporting from concord. we'll keep you up to date. bart will let us show when the trains will start moving. i know commuters want the know. well, moving on to the crisis in japan tonight where estimates of the death toll from thursday's earthquake and tsunami has topped 10,000. there are conflicting government reports reports reports of a possible partial

meltdown in side one of the reactor cores. hundreds of people have been checked for radiation exposure and over 100 people have tested positive. they say no radiation is likely to reach the u.s. this is stunning to watch. dramatic new images of friday's tsunami are still coming in. they're pushing into a narrow bay and black water flowing over a sea wall. everything in its pass is washed away. streets were turned into raging rivers and boats in the bay get caught in the flow when they're forced under an overpass. help from all over the world is pouring into japan this weekend. the u.s. military and the

agency for international development have sent a variety of supplies and expert workers. two teams, one from los angeles and one from fairfax county, virginia. each has 75 members and six dogs trained to detect survivors . several other countries, including britain and jeremy have sent teams with rescue dogs. it's too soon to know what the best way to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami is. people in the bay area with ties to japan are not waiting to find out. >> as international aid goes, it may only be a drop in the bucket, but the owner of -- restaurants here in san francisco says he'll give proceeds of every lunch and

dinner to help japan. >> they need all help they can get. his mother and his sister live near the nuclear power plant in fukushima. >> it's scary, the nuclear -- i don't know what's happened. maybe people are injured. >> and you're hoping your family is okay? >> yeah, i hope. >> at the buddhist temple, they're -- in talking with our temple members to make sure we're here to provide support for the long term and not just the short-term.

>> they say they're arranging donations. >> dudist or nondudist, it's hard to be prepareed for a disaster of this scale. it's up to us to rely on our hearts to tell us what to do, to help those in need. next time it could be us. >> the earthquake and tsunami victims in japan is so great, it's almost incomprehensible. the desire of people to help is also very large. >> well, the recovery continues tonight along the california coast where the sue -- tsunami came ashore. the police and marine patrol are still evaluating the damage estimated at $17 million and that's not including the boats.

no idea on when the harbor will be reopened. >> docks, boats, buoys were pounded by an 8-foot wave just before cruise santa cruz was hit. a timely disaster drill in the wake ovi -- of the devastation. people have been learning how to protect themselves and others during major disasters. >> emergency services are going to be taxed, and these small programs of community members with some basic training can really help us out and do some basic life saving measures. >> the program has been up and running for two years and it's taught hundreds of volunteers in that time.

motivated by the fact these respective people of the community were wearing turbines. >> the funeral was last night and the police are still looking for suspects. a mother has been charged with killing her 8-year-old daughter during a botched suicide. a care provider for the child found them. both were inside the car with the engine running. the girl died at the hospital. the mother is expected to survive, crystal johnson. police are looking for suspects in a bizarre robbery. a woman says who men offered to repair dents in their car. when the woman tried to conceal her cash, they ripped her pocket and fled the scene. pg&e says it will cover

world. the water park is taking applications online to fill 500 positions. applicants must be at least 16 years old. admissions, food service, retail, first aid and water safety. that looks good right now. i'm a little tired of the rain. >> i'm getting ready for a heat wave. >> when is it coming. >> i don't know. the rain starting around the bay area today. the clouds were moving in all day long, but the showers really picking up as we head toward the afternoon. scattered light showers at this point right now, but the front sliding on by and moving on through. we're seeing it and that's making its way towards part of the south bay right now. toward fremont you have cells moving to the east of you. that tracking all the way down into sunnyvale and now making its way into the -- as well. this looks like it will go over the next hour or so. there's more to come. we've got that energy making

its way toward hayward. more scattered showers showing up toward the north. i think we're going to see more as we head through the night tonight. we're going to watch the system taper off just a bit. how about rain totals. you've picked up three quarters of an inch and napa, also a quarter of an inch. san pablo, some there, but you get the idea. nothing is going to affect the waterways, but more sufficient rain. it continues to push through right now. temperatures not all that cold. this is a rather warm system. numbers running in the 50s and 60s as you head to the the south bay. as you plan on heading out, it looks pretty good. showers, though, further to the north and the high country, kind of a slushy mixup there.

winter weather advisories. there's some rain and snow. and then we'll see some snow dropping around the bay area. storm system looking impressive. still enough moisture to keep things going overnight. they will become more scattered as we head through the evening hours and then problem some left overshowers as we head through tomorrow morning. you will see the system moving on by and becoming more widely scattered, especially after midnight tonight. still a chance we could see a showers for the commute early tomorrow morning, but i don't think it's going to be a washout. i don't think the sky is going to part. we'll sneak? sunshine and maybe some warm 60s. this is the beginning of wet weather that will continue. another storm is expected to move in as we head toward tuesday afternoon. left overshowers come wednesday morning, then a brief break and
